Xue studied MA Photography at London College of Communication.

This film depicts her hometown of Dongying, the largest oil-refinery city and the second largest oil field in China.

In the 1960s, the government discovered huge oil resources in Dongying and recruited workers from across China to support exploitation and development of oil. After decades, with the gradual depletion of oil resources in the land, Shengli Oil Field has entered a cold winter; natural resources are destroyed, large numbers of workers are laid off.

Xue does not want to solidify the Western impression of China, nor to cater to the imagination of Orientalism in the western context, rather recognising that poverty, corruption, pollution and class exist in every country.
